The spring season blooms at Cambridge's Dance Complex, as choreographer/performer Jenna Riegel's captivating dance piece VARVARA takes the stage on Mar. 1 and 2. Making its local debut, the piece responds to Alexander Rodchenko's 1922 photograph Performing Furniture and the creative legacy of the Russian Constructivist artist Varvara Stepanova. Drawing inspiration from Stepanova's textiles, visual poetry, costumes, and set designs, the performance explores the notion of the human body as a machine – as articulated by Soviet theater critic Konstantin Rudnitsky. VARVARA also invites the audience into Riegel's own imagined dialogue with Stepanova herself, with striking musical composition and a sound narrative journey.
