Getting to the airport is rarely the relaxing part of a trip. Between traffic, parking, security lines and the general chaos that seems to accompany modern air travel, the vacation usually doesn't start until you're already through TSA.

Boston is about to test a different approach.

Beginning June 1, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) will launch a first-of-its-kind Remote Terminal pilot program in Framingham, which will let eligible passengers complete TSA screening before they ever reach Boston Logan International Airport. Travelers will then board a secure shuttle directly to Logan and arrive beyond the airport's security checkpoint, essentially skipping one of the most dreaded parts of the journey altogether.

The concept sounds a little futuristic, but it's pretty straightforward: travelers flying on Delta or JetBlue between 5:30 am and 4 pm can reserve a seat on a dedicated bus departing from Framingham. After checking in and clearing security, passengers board a secure vehicle that takes them directly to Logan, where they're dropped off just steps from their gate. The service costs just $9 each way.

According to Massport, this is the first program of its kind in the United States. While transportation company Landline operates airport-connected bus services elsewhere in the country, the Framingham pilot marks the first time travelers will pass through a remote terminal and security checkpoint before heading directly into an airport's secure area.

"Imagine arriving at the airport having already checked in and cleared security and then being dropped off just steps from your gate," Massport CEO Rich Davey said in announcing the program. "This is the kind of stress-free process we're working to make a reality for everyone."

The new service builds on the popularity of Logan Express, Massport's network of airport bus routes. Framingham is already the busiest Logan Express location and Massport says the broader system carried more than 2.7 million passengers in 2025. Beyond convenience, officials also see the program as a way to reduce traffic around Logan by encouraging more travelers to use high-occupancy transportation options rather than driving to the airport. In 2025, roughly 22% of Logan passengers arrived via public transit, airport buses or other shared transportation services.

If the pilot proves successful, Massport plans to expand access to additional airlines. For now, MetroWest travelers may get a rare airport luxury: arriving at the terminal with the hard part already behind them.
