Time Out says

The ornate 1,700-seat Colonial Theatre (built in 1900) is now owned by Emerson College, but it holds the title as the oldest continually operating theatre in America—except for its renovation closures, that is. The hand-painted murals in the lobby, mosaic flooring, and gold leaf covered moldings are highly impressive. But the Colonial Theatre’s considerable cachet was built from its reputation for pre-Broadway premieres of musicals that became icons in the industry. The theater still has significant premieres, and it also hosts all kinds of productions, both classic and contemporary.

What’s on

Paranormal Activity

Most horror movies rely on what the camera can hide. Paranormal Activity has to pull it off in full view of a live audience, and that's exactly what makes this production so unsettling. Inspired by the blockbuster film franchise, the new stage thriller follows a couple hoping for a fresh start, only to discover that some things are impossible to leave behind. The pre-Broadway engagement at Boston's historic Emerson Colonial Theatre offers audiences an early look before the production heads to New York, adding another notable title to the theater's long history of launching Broadway-bound shows. Created by the team behind Sleep No More, the production leans on practical effects, illusions, and mounting tension rather than cheap tricks. If you're the type who enjoys the suspense almost as much as the scare itself, this is likely to stay with you long after the lights come up.
