August Moon Festival always manages to feel both familiar and surprising, even if you’ve been coming for years. The crowds gather early for the lion dances, but it’s the quieter moments—calligraphy demos, the scent of incense, a kid’s first bite of mooncake—that linger. Food stalls stretch along the street, each one tempting you to abandon your dinner plans. The mooncakes are the obvious draw, but don’t skip the savory snacks or the vendors selling things you won’t find at your usual haunts. Performances run the gamut from traditional music to contemporary dance, and the energy shifts with each act. It’s a rare chance to see so many corners of the community come together, and the festival’s mix of old and new keeps it from feeling like a museum piece. If you want a taste of the city’s real cultural heartbeat, this is where you’ll find it.
