The first ever British Takeaway Awards were held on November 9, with unassuming Bristol pizza joint Pimms Pizza picking up the prize for 'Best Takeaway in the South West'.

Forget those fancy Michelin stars or glowing reviews from Tom Parker-Bowles – these awards were created to reward the unsung heroes of the food and drink world, recognising that the takeaway industry contributes a whopping £9 billion to the national economy.

After a round of public voting, the five most popular takeaways from 13 regions across the country were asked to submit their reasons why they should be crowned 'Britain's best takeaway'. This was followed by a visit from a mystery shopper prior to the awards evening.

The ceremony was hosted by Ainsley Harriott and celebrity couple Vernon Kaye and Tess Daly, and saw Pimms Pizza in North Street, Bedminster, emerging as the best in the South West.

The takeaway has been run by owner Heath Pimm and his wife for the last two years and impressed the judges with their menu and with the quality of ingredients.
