How to get the most out of Record Store Day in Bristol

It's back again on Saturday April 18 for perhaps its most controversial year ever, thanks to Bristol's own Howling Owl taking on the majors along with the reliably ace Sonic Cathedral. But Record Store Day is always a joyous occasion in Bristol, simply because, unlike many other big cities, we've got plenty of unique shops to celebrate it in.

Here are a few pointers on how to come away with a successful haul and some fond memories…

Wake up super early
Rock 'n' roll and music don't always go hand in hand with rising early, but for one day only it's an essential part of fandom. After all, you'll be gutted when you ask for The Wytches seven-inch single only to find they're long gone. Rise Records implemented a rather impressive raffle-ticket queuing system last year. You snooze, you lose.

Don't just do one shop, hit a few
If you're not an early bird then this will increase your chances of getting everything you want. Also, be sure to go to the markets and shops that aren't making a big deal of the day. While you might be desperate for that Warpaint 12-inch split with Daughter, the day is really about supporting the independents. So as well as Rise, Head and Idle Hands, remember to visit Wanted Records in St Nicholas Market and Plastic Wax on Gloucester Road.

Hang around
You'll probably want to head home and doze for the rest of the day, but this could cost you some valuable in-store performances. Last year Rise treated us to shows from George Ezra, East India Youth and Woman's Hour, while Head put on some great local acts like Trust Fund. It's really a no-brainer.

Pick up some local releases
Even if they're not on the 'official list'. Our beloved local label Howling Owl joined forces with Sonic Cathedral to hit out at the unnecessary major-label releases and reissues clogging up the pressing plants and stymying  the independent labels the day is supposed to help. So the only way to support our indies is to buy their records – most of which will be way more exciting than those offered by the majors anyway.

Talk to people
You're not going to make any friends sitting in the queue reading that paperback all morning – have a chat, strike up a conversation. Hell, you could be going to gigs with them in a few months. You might also learn a few things off the staff. They are, after all, the very heart and soul of our record shops.

Have a few drinks
It's on a Saturday, right? So embrace the spirit and sink a few bevvies. Friska, right by Rise, always has great local beers and ciders, and they do some cracking food. There's absolutely no excuse to skulk off home.

Remember to come back
Record Store Day is an important cultural celebration, but it's vital we keep supporting our shops for the rest of the year. We're lucky to have so many artistic hubs right here in Bristol, but use them or lose them.

Lastly, watch this film
If you're not already excited, check out this film – or go googling for live performances from venues across the country last year.

Check out the Bristol bands you should be listening to right now.
