Star gazing and street food, gigantic bugs and UK garage, modern art and music - here are ten great things to do in Bristol this week.

 

Star Party On The Downs, Monday, £6, 8-10pm
Join Bristol Astronomical Society for an evening of stargazing on the Downs from 8pm. Look at the moon and planets through telescopes and learn how to spot key spring constellations.

 

Elevator Sound & Novation present: My Machines, Hamilton House, Saturday 12-7pm
This Saturday local music-tech suppliers Elevator Sound join forces with Novation to present a day of lectures and masterclasses from some of the pioneers of the Bristol music scene at Hamilton House on Stokes Croft. With Roni Size, Krust, Hypercolour Records, Smith & Mighty and many more among the attendees, this looks essential for any fan of electronic music. Events run from noon to 7pm - register for free entry here.

 

Garage Nation, O2 Academy, Saturday, £14.95
Wind back the clock to the late 90s at O2 Academy on Saturday as the Garage Nation tour comes to town. The man-machine DJ EZ headlines, joined by Mike Delinquent, Scott Garcia, DJ Cartier and MCs PSG, Viper and Ranking.

 

Bristol Eats Street Food Market, Temple Quay, Thursday, 12-2.30pm
If you’re bored of eating the same old thing every lunch time, head to Temple Quay on Thursday for the Bristol Eats street food market. Praised as one of the best in Europe, there’s loads to choose from, including eats from the likes of Feastie Boys and Jacob’s Finest Falafel. Open from midday to 2.30pm.

 

Blue Screen, The Cube, Wednesday from 7.30pm £3
Made a short film you’d like to see on the big screen? Head to The Cube on Wednesday night and join other filmmakers at this open-screen event - just bring your movie along on USB stick or DVD. Even if you’re not a budding Scorsese, you're more than welcome to come down to support and be inspired.

 

Big Bugs Exhibition, Bristol Zoo, from Saturday
Bristol Zoo will be taken over by 13 giant animatronic insects for the summer, with the Big Bugs exhibition opening this Saturday. Moving, hissing and even spraying water, this is one for kids and big kids alike.

 

Pyronaut Trips, M-Shed, Saturday 12-5pm, £4-£6
Take a unique trip round Bristol’s harbourside area onboard the Pyronaut, the firefighting ship that served the city’s docks from 1934 to 1973. 

 

Fatman, Brewery Theatre, £9-£13, 8.15pm
Running until Saturday, this is a one-man laughter-filled reworking of the classic greek myth Orpheus, where the grief stricken protagonist becomes a donut-obsessed comedian.

 

Do Ho Suh: New York City Apartment / Corridor / Bristol, BMAG, from Saturday, free
Contemporary artist Do Ho Suh presents a unique new immersive installation at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery from this Saturday until late September. Recreating a corridor from his New York apartment in fabric, the South Korean aims to explore his own cultural and physical displacement.

 

Get Hard
Will Ferrell and Kevin Hartt star in this tongue-in-cheek, gag-heavy comedy that might seem dumb, but which our reviewer called  ‘daring and brave.’ Read more here.
