During the summer months, there are few better places to sit and while away a few hours than on the top deck of The Grain Barge, Bristol Beer Factory’s most distinctive venue. As its name suggests, the converted barge has been in position beside Mardyke Wharf in Hotwells since 2007, and offers genuinely unique views of Bristol Harbour.
Hangover-friendly sun deck aside, there’s plenty else to like about The Grain Barge. Its harbour-side indoor bar and restaurant area remains snug, comfortable and warm all year round, while the trademark Bristol Beer Factory range offers something for everyone. The reduced alcohol Nova is a perfect session beer, Hefe is a tasty – if rich – German-style wheat beer, and the 6.4 per cent Southville Hop is little less than dynamite.
The venue’s music offering, with performances and occasional DJ sets taking place below deck in the “Hold Bar”, is also pretty good. You’ll find live bands every Thursday night throughout the year, with up-and-coming local acts being joined by performers from further afield.
