The Lounge

Much-loved chain restaurant that serves an incredible all-day brunch of breakfast classics, cocktails and burgers

Bristol’s love of the Lounge chain knows no bounds, and there’s not a citizen of this city who can overhear a conversation favouring one branch over another without chipping in to defend their No 1.

We wouldn’t dream of choosing sides (Tinto, Deco, Banco, Grupo and Porto, you all go the distance in our book), but this sizeable North Street site is where is all began more than a decade ago. The chain’s gone national since, with branches as far afield as Liverpool and Brighton, but the same reliable formula remains.

The all-day brunch menu is a showstopper that includes burgers, tapas and damn fine cocktails, all ordered at the busy counter and delivered to your table with a smorgasbord of sauces.

The full English covers all bases with bacon, egg, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato and perfect hash browns, but savvy meat-eaters might want to add on one of the sweetcorn fritters from the equally impressive veggie version. Elsewhere there are pancake stacks, breakfast muffins and veggie kedgeree to get stuck into, all best accompanied by the well-spiced Bloody Mary.

This was my first encounter with this chain (mainly because although there are 76 restaurants in this group, none are in London)

I didn't have particularly have high hopes for this place although it looked good from the outside. I www very pleasantly surprised.

We happened to visit on a 'tapas Tuesday' which meant we got 3 plates of tapas and a glass of wine for under £10, bargain. The selection of tapas was good, including everything you would expect like chorizo, patatas brava and crispy squid plus some extras. My personal favourite was the pulled pork with a touch of star anise, delicious. The house white and rosè were both lovely too.

What really set this place apart was the service. The idea with Lounge is that you should feel at home and we really did. There were plenty of games on hand to amuse us and colouring sheets for our young daughter to scribble on.

Well worth a visit.
