The American breakfast in Buenos Aires has gone from being a rarity to becoming a well-established part of the city's food scene. Inspired by traditional US diners, New York delis and brunch culture, it brings together sweet and savoury flavours and isn't tied to any particular time of day: you can enjoy it in the morning, at lunchtime or in the afternoon.

Scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, fluffy pancakes, French toast, bagels and all kinds of sandwiches are staples on the menus of cafés and restaurants embracing comfort food, with many making their own bread and pastries in-house.

1. Nicky Cheese

“A typical American breakfast is hearty and filling, combines sweet and savoury flavours, and isn't limited to a particular time of day,” says the team at Nicky Cheese, where they have embraced the concept of “all-day breakfast” and adapted it to local tastes. Their inspiration comes from traditional American diners, New York-style breakfasts and brunch culture.

The American Breakfast is one of the dishes that best represents this concept: a combination of scrambled eggs, American sausage, bacon, hash browns, cream cheese dip, homemade jam and brioche bread made at their own Bakehouse. “Pancakes are also among our most popular choices, thanks to their flavour, fluffiness and presentation.” The classic version comes with butter and honey butter syrup, but there are four other options to choose from. On the sweet side, cheesecake takes centre stage. “We aim for a generous portion with a well-balanced base and a wonderfully creamy texture.”

Insider tip: The menu also features classic sandwiches such as the tuna melt and Cuban sandwich, burritos and cookies, which can be paired with coffee, hot chocolate, speciality lattes and smoothies.

2. Solileb

Solileb brings together the tastes, experiences and travels of pastry chef Melany Biblos. “Besides Japanese cuisine, I'm a huge fan of American comfort food and the way it turns simple, everyday dishes into something special,” she says. That's why her speciality coffee shop features several American classics.

Three favourites share a simple yet winning combination of ingredients: homemade bread, cheese, eggs and bacon. First up is the classic grilled cheese, a toasted brioche sandwich filled with Gruyère, Fontina, Reggianito, mozzarella and onion confit. Then there's the egg, bacon & cheese sandwich, which combines scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, melted cheese and aioli. Finally, the Asian-inspired egg sando features egg salad and Japanese mayonnaise, soy-marinated cucumbers and chives, served on homemade shokupan bread. “They're delicious dishes made with familiar ingredients and textures that make all the difference. Just looking at them makes you want to take a bite.”

Insider tip: You'll also find Reuben pastrami sandwiches, trout melts, club sandwiches, French toast, cookies, cinnamon rolls and plenty of other classics, all prepared on-site. Pair them with coffee, a wide selection of iced lattes, lemonades or fruity sodas.

3. Malv贸n

More than 15 years ago, Malvón introduced Buenos Aires diners to the iconic American brunch. Inspired by New York delis, its all-day menu features savoury dishes, freshly baked bread and pastries, all made in-house. “Eggs Benedict are our customers' favourite. They've been on the menu since day one and work at any time of day,” says founder Darío Muhafara.

“The secret lies in the English muffin, which we make the traditional way, like a small griddled bread roll coated in polenta, and in the hollandaise sauce, which has to be just right: light and velvety, buttery and fresh.” The dish is completed with poached eggs and smoked pork loin. Another Malvón signature is the hot pastrami sandwich, served on traditional homemade rye bread with caraway seeds and filled with house-made pastrami, caramelised onions, pickled cucumbers and wholegrain mustard.

4. OLI

Olivia Saal opened OLI with the idea of creating an all-day menu featuring familiar flavours that reflect her own identity. “I wanted to take international classics and reinterpret them in our own way, a bit like pop culture,” she explains. American cuisine proved to be a natural fit. “It's popular, inclusive and universal, with dishes that people immediately recognise just by hearing their names, which makes them more accessible.”

Olivia's personal favourite is the club sandwich, filled with chicken, lettuce, tomato, egg, Gouda, bacon and aioli, and served with fries. Another highlight is the fish bagel with cream cheese, pickles and capers, inspired by New York and its Jewish grab-and-go food culture. Finally, she recommends the brioche French toast, which “comes out wonderfully fluffy, with a thin layer of caramelised sugar on top and a hint of spice.” There's one version with yoghurt cream, bacon and maple syrup, and another with cream, fruit, honey and herbs. All the bread is made in-house and specially developed for each dish.

Insider tip: Other American-inspired dishes worth trying at OLI include grilled cheese, porridge and all-day desserts such as pecan pie, apple pie and sticky toffee pudding. Alongside speciality coffee, there's a selection of tea blends, iced lattes, homemade lemonades and a dedicated Bloody Mary menu.

5. Jay's

“At Jay's, we recreate the classic American breakfast you see in the movies, the kind you'd find in diners across the United States,” say the owners. The menu ranges from hearty breakfasts with eggs and bacon to indulgent options such as pancakes and waffles, accompanied by bottomless coffee and milkshakes.

According to the team, one of the most popular breakfast choices is the Upper West, which includes scrambled eggs, a hash brown, bacon, bread, pancakes with a side of syrup, refillable coffee and orange juice. Another crowd favourite is the chicken & waffles: two waffles served with five chicken fingers and syrup for dipping. Rounding out the top three is the East Hampton, featuring French toast, scrambled eggs, American sausage, bacon, a side of syrup and refillable coffee.

Insider tip: There are also plenty of breakfast combos, pancakes and waffles with a choice of sides, different varieties of French toast, omelettes, hash browns, sandwiches, bagels and fried chicken. “We want people to feel like they're travelling without ever leaving the city,” the owners explain.
