Time Out says

I've lived the majority of my life in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town, so I am a little annoyed that it took me nearly four decades to visit this wonderful hotel, located pretty much on my doorstep in Constantia.

If you love comfort, historical significance, great service, and delicious food, then The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel is that spot. Throw into the mix a stunning nine acres of gardens to explore and a whole host of activities to partake in - both at the hotel and in the surrounding area, and you have an adventure awaiting you which is sure to satisfy your need to relax and be pampered. I know that is how I felt when I sadly had to check out...

Why stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel?

I'm not going to go into a full history lesson on the hotel and its property; just know that its roots date all the way back to 1693 and it's definitely a big plus as to why you should book your stay. I'd also highly recommend asking a member of staff to take you around the property, as the nuggets of information will make your stay all the more richer - as it did for me.

Over and above that, there is a warmth to the hotel. It feels like you are at home. I know that sometimes sounds a bit cheesy, but it's true. From the lovely staff to the homely feel of the rooms - not to mention its prime location - it is well worth checking out.

What are the rooms like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel?

The hotel is home to 51 guest rooms, suites, and villas. I was afforded the opportunity to stay in one of the suites, and it was super comfortable and homely, as previously mentioned. The suite has a lounge area, open-plan bedroom, and compact yet inviting bathroom with a BIG bathtub, large shower, and his and hers vanities. The bed itself was amazing and afforded me the chance to get some proper rest after a hectic few weeks of work.

The look sticks as close to the historical design as possible, but with a few modern touches. The balcony - accessible through an old-school window and barn-style door, opens the room up to some magnificent views of the back of Table Mountain and gorgeous gardens. The winter morning sun added an extra glow and warmth.

While I could not check out the Madiba Villa, I was told that it's the perfect spot for large families and has its own private pool - which is always a winner in the hot Cape Town summer months. Not to worry if you can't book the villa, as there is another pool on the property to help you cool off.

What is the restaurant like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel?

There are two restaurants located on the property, with The Conservatory where I would enjoy both dinner and breakfast during my stay. The other restaurant, The Greenhouse, is where high teas are served, with garden views as the backdrop to what I imagine is a pretty tasty affair.

The Conservatory's menu is varied, with both South African classics in dishes like bobotie and international influences, making the decision of what to eat quite challenging. For starters, the pork and prawn dumplings proved to be the perfect choice, with the rich flavours provided by the soy and tamarind dressing, celeriac tahini purée, guava compote, gremolata, and toasted cashews complementing the dumplings perfectly. It was most definitely the standout dish of the evening. Kudos to the chef.

For mains, the chipotle-glazed Norwegian salmon was another expertly created dish, but it lacked the flavour bomb of the starter. Guys, that starter was really incredible - and I am sure I will mention it a few times more before the end of this review.

For dessert, the caramelised white chocolate cremeux was the perfect ending. Who knew popcorn made sense on a dessert plate? I do now...

For breakfast, a Continental buffet was complemented by a choice of hot dishes - you can have both. The pastries were what you would expect - nothing spectacular, but the eggs Benedict was a lovely start to the day. I quite like plated hot breakfasts in hotels instead of buffets, so well done for that.

What is the service like at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel?

It really is top notch. From the lady who greeted me at the gate all the way to the general staff and managers, they all made me feel incredibly welcome and were always willing to go the extra mile. The manager on duty even asked if she could carry my bag for me - a first for someone of that level at a hotel. I politely declined, but that just goes to show that service runs from the top down - it is definitely entrenched in the ethos of the hotel.

A standout facility, The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

The hotel is packed with facilities to make your stay enjoyable, from their wellness spa and hair salon to pool and gorgeous gardens. Fun fact, the hotel boasts six camphor trees on the property - known as the 'champions', while Kirstenbosch Gardens is only home to two. Another win for The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel!

For those looking to head into town or the surrounding areas, there is a shuttle service available to help you explore, while their tennis court and gym are waiting for those who are exercise-inclined. If you have an electric vehicle, don't stress, as there is a dedicated charging space just for you.

If you are on a business trip or are looking to hold some meetings, there is a host of conference rooms available for you to use - subject to availability and booking dependent, of course.

What is the area like around The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel?

The Constantia area of Cape Town is naturally stunning and home to a number of the city's best activities. On the doorstep of the hotel you will find the Alphen Trail - a green space dedicated to nature walks and horse riding.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is not too far away either, while the Constantia Wine Route - the oldest wine-producing region in the Southern Hemisphere - will keep you in a jolly good mood.

For the more adventurous, the Forest Adventure Ziplines and Acrobranch Adventure Courses are also a short trip down the road, while you can shop to your heart's content at Constantia Village or the newish Constantia Emporium.

You are also roughly 20min away from Cape Town and the V&A Waterfront.

Why you should book a stay at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel

I really enjoyed the effortless comfort of this hotel during my stay. Throw into the mix the gorgeous gardens, historical significance, and close proximity to the Constantia Wine Route, and you have the perfect mix to create memories and get some much-needed chill time in. Oh, and don't forget to try the dumplings! See, I told you I'd mention them again.
