In the famous words of Oprah, “You get a seat. You get a seat. Everyone gets a seat!”

This Mandela Day, Cape Town is doing something a little different. It’s setting a table; a very, very long one.
Come Saturday, 18 July, Bree Street will transform into a giant “Langtafel”, stretching from Wale Street to Strand Street with space for up to 1,600 people to sit down and share a meal.
No stage. No speeches. Just strangers, neighbours and total newcomers pulling up a chair side by side.

Afrikaans for “long table”, and the langtafel is precisely the point.
Organised by a coalition including Young Urbanists NPC, Studio H, Mission for Inner City Cape Town and the Community Chest of the Western Cape, the event runs from noon to 5pm and signals the return of Open Streets on Bree.
Peter Heeger, CEO of the Community Chest, put it simply: "Nelson Mandela had a rare ability to bring people together, and the Langtafel is built to carry that same spirit forward. It turns a public street into a space where dignity and belonging co-exist."
Organisers have deliberately built the guest list to include over 500 members of Cape Town’s homeless community, who’ll receive a complimentary, wholesome meal alongside everyone else at the table.
There’s no separate line. No separate section. Only one table for the whole city.
For everybody else, bring a packed picnic or grab something from one of the participating restaurants along Bree Street. Organisers are covering bread for the entire table, plus a surprise dessert nobody’s spoiling in advance.

Food designer Hannerie Visser of Studio H tells the Weekend Argus: “As a food designer, I believe a table can be much more than a place to eat. It can become a place to meet, to listen, to share stories and to see one another differently.”
That’s the whole idea. Rather than the usual Mandela Day formats of clean-up campaigns or donation drives, this year’s event relies on something more immediate: sitting down and sharing a meal with someone you’ve never met, in a space normally clogged with traffic and takeaway coffee runs.
Time Out Tip: Ranked 11th on Time Out’s 2024 list of the Coolest Streets in the World, Bree Street is the ultimate culinary hotspot in Cape Town’s CBD.
The Langtafel takes place on Bree Street, between Wale and Strand Streets, on Saturday 18 July, from noon to 5pm.
Bring your own food or buy from local eateries, or show up to soak in the atmosphere. Businesses and residents can also get involved by donating through the Community Chest, sponsoring meals, or volunteering with the event’s “Green Squad” on the day.
Whatever seat you land in, the invitation is the same: show up, sit down, and share the table with whoever ends up next to you.
