Where to eat out for less this winter

1. Burger & Lobster

Who doesn’t love the vibes of Burger & Lobster on Bree Street? It’s a contemporary space with cool tunes and plenty of urban appeal. And this winter you’ll want to visit on ‘Double Trouble Chewsday’ where just R199 gets you a Beef Smash Burger with burnt butter mayo, cheese and pickled onions, and a Southern Fried Chicken Burger with Sriracha Mayo. Both are served with their signature fries. It’s available every Tuesday at lunch and dinner for sit down and takeaway. Also don’t forget that every day from 4pm-5.30pm is the Half-Price Social Hour, with 50% off on selected drinks and a well-priced menu of Bar Bites.

2. The Pot Luck Club Brunch

The indulgent Pot Luck Club Sunday Brunch is a firm favourite for truly elevated sky-high Sunday dining in the city. And now their Winter Extravaganza makes it even more affordable, priced at an all-inclusive rate of R1250 per person. That includes the full 10-course menu of delicious tasting plates to be shared across the table, alongside bottomless bubbly (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and the DIY Bloody Mary Station. 3. Foxcroft

Don’t be deceived by its location in a small suburban shopping centre: Foxcroft dishes up some of the city’s most inventive small plates. Perhaps that’s not surprising, given that it’s part of the acclaimed La Colombe group of restaurants. But here chef Glenn Williams puts his own stamp on the experience.

Their Winter Menu Special offers a four-course taste of the kitchen, starting with the superb Foxcroft bread, followed by one tapas plate (don’t miss the Yellowfin tuna tataki), one main course (ditto the Pan-roasted line fish with smoked mussels and pak choi) followed by one dessert (they’re all good: Glenn’s background is in pastry. At R495 per person it’s one of the best deals in town. Valid for lunch only until August 31, 2024.

4. GALJOEN

With a set menu focused on ethical South African seafood, GALJOEN has made waves in the city’s restaurant scene since opening in 2023. 6. ëlgr

Amid the bustle of Kloof Street it’s easy to walk right past ëlgr. This winter his special menu offers three courses for R395 per person, with plates ranging from more-ish mushroom soup to a 12-hour oxtail ragu with semolina gnocchi. But if you’ve been dreaming of a taste of what Executive Chef James Gaag can cook up, look no further than the La Colombe winter menu. Available for lunch only, Monday to Friday, at R1095 per person it’s an unforgettable eight-course discovery of this world-class kitchen. And yes, don’t worry, their signature Tuna ‘La Colombe’ is on the menu!

8. The Pot Luck Club Prix Fixe Lunch

When it opened in 2012 Luke Dale Roberts’ The Pot Luck Club was a pioneer of the (seemingly unstoppable) small-plate trend in Cape Town, paving the way with a menu of punchy flavour-packed Asian-inspired plates. This winter you can enjoy a taste of it all for less, with a menu of six courses for just R450 per person. Look forward to the likes of Roosterkoek with whipped butter, the famous Fish Sliders, the even more famous Smoked Beef Fillet with black pepper and truffle café au Lait, and a delicious dessert board of PLC Sweets.
