All the best places in Cape Town to buy a set of kicks, or get your favourite sneakers looking like new again.

Cape Town is a city made to be explored on foot, but if you want to step out in style, you’d best leave those veldskoen for the bush, and the plakkies for the beach.

Rather, slip your feet into something with a bit of street-cred.

Happily, Cape Town has no shortage of specialist sneaker stores where you can get your kicks in more ways than one. Whether you’re a fan of a brand, looking for a 'beater' or prefer something a little more indie, these streetwise boutiques and sneaker-fan emporiums – some with streetwear, apparel and accessories too – are filled with shoes that’ll have you skipping down the street.

Where to get your kicks in Cape Town

1. Shelflife

If you’re a true sneakerhead, start here. One of the Mother City’s heavyweight sneaker stores, Shelflife brings rare releases, streetwear and sneaker culture to the buzz of Bree Street. The footwear line-up spans all the big brands you’d expect – Nike, Jordan, adidas, New Balance and ASICS – alongside hard-to-get pairs for the connoisseur and collector. Also look out for regular launches here. It’s the go-to for serious sneaker shopping in the city centre, especially if you’re after rare drops that don’t sit around for long. They also stock graffiti spray paint, markers, and nozzles if you plan to paint the town red.

2. Archive

For a design-led sneaker and streetwear experience, Archive is your go-to. The Cape Town flagship is a drop-dead-gorgeous retail experience that’s all about limited drops, branded sneaker releases and a portal into the wider streetwear ecosystem of apparel, accessories and in-store culture events. Keep an eye out on their socials for First Thursday special events. Online shopping is a seamless experience thanks to their tie-up with bash.com.

3. Court Order

New sneakers. Pre-loved sneakers. Dirty sneakers looking to get clean. You’ll find it all at Court Order on Roeland Street. Both a sneaker store and streetwear marketplace, rare and resale pairs are the draw at Court Order, making it a popular stop for serious kick collectors. And whether you’re looking to freshen up or sell, their dedicated sneaker laundry on-site makes it easy to drop off worn pairs needing some TLC while you browse the shelves.

4. Lemkus

If Shelflife is all about the latest drops, Lemkus adds in a solid dose of sportswear and sneaker history. Established in 1935, this institution in St George’s Mall has evolved from selling sports gear and footwear into one of the city’s most respected sneaker and culture destinations. With big-brand kicks alongside apparel and accessories, it’s sneaker culture with a serious street-style edge.

5. Swest Kicks

If you’ve had your heart – and feet – set on adding a specific sneaker to your collection, you’ll likely find it through Swest Kicks. This compact city-centre store is all about exclusive sneakers and streetwear, both new and pre-owned, focused on sought-after pairs, with retail in-store and a click-and-collect service for online shopping. There is also a sneaker laundry operating from the store, including premium cleans, sole unyellowing, minor re-glue work, repellent spray and leather paint touch-ups. Delivery is free if you drop more than R1000.

6. Story Cape Town

Another top stop for collectors, and anyone looking for sneakers beyond the usual big-brand suspects, Story Cape Town is built around premium sneakers, apparel and collectibles on consignment. The store works with pre-approved sellers and authenticates items before resale, with stock including new, unworn and selected pre-owned pieces. You can buy online, but their store on Buitengracht Street is open for buyers to inspect the condition and check sizing in person before committing to buy.

7. InHand Store

In the streetwear lane off Kloof Street, InHand serves up sneakers, apparel and accessories under one roof. Footwear is central to InHand Store, but it’s not the only reason to visit. Start with sneakers and then build your look from the ground up… you’ll find everything from a Louis Vuitton Clapton backpack to a New Era L.A. Dodgers ball cap on offer here. We especially love their curated collection of leading local brands: think Patrick James, Athena and Valhalla, to start.

Squeaky-sneaks: where to get them cleaned

1. The Sneaker Shack

The Sneaker Shack is one of the easiest ways to have worn trainers cleaned without making a day of it. Start online by choosing the clean, adding extras, and selecting a collection date. Their team then collects and returns the shoes. Services include cleaning, care products, cap and bag cleaning, plus restoration and repair options. It’s best for everyday pairs that need a proper refresh, especially if you want collection and delivery rather than a store drop-off. But, if it’s easier to visit in-store, you’ll find branches in Gardens and Claremont.

2. SneakerFedz

Though it’s a little hidden away in a strip of small neighbourhood stores, SneakerFedz is an excellent option for sneaker care in the southern suburbs. Just off busy Belvedere Road, SneakerFedz can take care of cleaning, sole yellowing and repairs, with same-day service available. There are also large discounts for servicing multiple pairs.
