Caves are nature’s coolest wonders – literally. The science is simple: once you reach a certain depth, the temperature stays constant year-round, and rock and soil are excellent natural insulators. That’s why visiting a cave is a brilliant summer activity – especially since many remain closed during the colder months. Right in the heart of Cascais, you’ll find the Grutas do Poço Velho, a prehistoric cave system thought to have served as a burial site during the Paleolithic era. These days, it’s the perfect place to escape the summer heat and enjoy a fun, refreshing morning underground. The caves are open for self-guided visits on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, from 10.00 to 13.00 throughout the summer. Got a group? You can also book a guided tour. Cool, right?
