Where Don Alfonso 1890 once stood, you will now find Ardea. The restaurant at the Legacy hotel has swapped high-end Italian cooking for Portuguese comfort food. “A chic hotel does not have to mean pretty, plastic food. You can eat well, like at your grandparents’ house,” says chef José Luíz Diniz, who serves dishes such as Cascais-style fish soup, hake fillets with saucy tomato rice, tuna loin Bulhão Pato-style, Portuguese-style beef sirloin and black pork cheeks with sweet potato purée. The décor has been left untouched: the apricot and brick-toned wallpaper with herons and flowers remains, as do the huge fringed lamps, and the carpet and ceiling with the same colourful pattern. Some pastas and pizzas have also survived on the menu, including the spaghetti Don Alfonso, with fresh tomato sauce, parmesan, basil and lemon, and classics such as Margherita, Diavola and Prosciutto e Rúcula.
