Most holidays are really just about the food and Easter is no exception. Not widely celebrated in Thailand, the Christian festival still finds a way into the calendar – we suppose any excuse for a buffet, party or meetup is good enough for Chiang Mai. Of course there are more elements to it than just the food, but a good Easter egg hunt and a few drinks to go with it are usually what people look forward to most.

Chiang Mai knows this well, which is why the city pulls out a surprising number of stops every year with brunches, buffets and feasting spreads that give you every excuse to book a table and celebrate – regardless if it's your culture or not.

Whether you're after a family day out at Shangri-La complete with pool access, a five-evening buffet at U Nimman, a drive out to Four Seasons in Mae Rim or a blowout at InterContinental where the menu is more than impressive – Chiang Mai has an Easter table for every kind of person this year.

Easter at Anantara means a good time for every member of the family. Their gourmet buffet promises classic Easter roast selections – from gravy-soaked Yorkshire puds and perfectly roasted carrots to a fresh salad bar and artisanal cheese and cold cuts. You'll leave having to loosen a notch on your belt.

All of this set in the sophisticated colonial surroundings of 1921 House within the Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, accompanied by live jazz and views of the Ping River. The kids are sorted too with an Easter egg hunt to keep them occupied while the adults can schmooze over one more glass of bubbly.

April 5. Starting at B2,290 per person with optional upgrades to free-flow wine, B1,190 for children aged 4-11. Book a table here. Anantara Chiang Mai Resort. 12pm-3pm

A trip out to Mae Rim is worth it when spending Easter Sunday at Four Seasons Chiang Mai.

KHAO – their award-winning restaurant – is hosting an Easter brunch from 12pm to 3pm on April 5, with live cooking stations, seasonal highlights from Executive Chef Alvin Dela Cruz and live music setting the tone throughout. For the little ones, the resort's sprawling grounds become a full activity zone – Easter egg hunt, egg painting, basket making and games across some of the most beautiful green spaces in Chiang Mai. Wide open and properly challenging and you don’t even need a room booking to join in the fun.

Stick around for afternoon tea and you won't regret it. Executive Pastry Chef Yanisa Wiangnon is doing something extra special with Chiang Mai strawberries – harvested just minutes from the resort and turned into delicate pastries and desserts best enjoyed with the Mae Rim Valley laid out in front of you.

Who said Easter celebrations only have to be in the afternoon or on one day? U Nimman's Eat@Rincome is stretching it out over five evenings and inviting you to come once the sun sets.

The Easter Weekly Feast runs April 1-5 from 6pm-10pm with a buffet built around the season's classics done well. Highlights include Easter pie, pineapple-glazed ham, slow-roasted lamb and pistachio-crusted salmon with lemon butter sauce – the kind of spread that covers everyone’s tastes at the table. Fresh seafood, sashimi and desserts round things out so you're going home full without question. And at B950 per person, this is one of the better value Easter tables in the city.

April 1-5. B950 per person. Book via 052 005 111 or email reserve@unimmanchiangmai.com. U Nimman Chiang Mai. 6pm-10pm

Shangri-La Chiang Mai is making Easter easy for families and the kids-eat-free deal alone is worth booking for.

The Easter Garden Brunch Buffet runs April 5-6 at Kad Kafe from 12pm-3pm with a spread that covers pretty much every corner of a proper Easter table. Salads sourced from Royal Project farms in Chiang Mai, a live BBQ station with beef tenderloin, white prawns and pork belly, hot cross buns fresh from the bakery basket and a carvery serving steaming slow-roasted lamb leg and a salmon Wellington that’s to die for. Save room for the ‘Easter sweet garden’ – roasted rhubarb tart, tiramisu au citron and salted caramel banana pudding among others.

But it’s the family perks are what set this one apart. Kids eat free with every paying adult and there's a dedicated Easter workshop to keep the little ones occupied. The whole family gets complimentary access to the pool, waterslide and splash zone too – but remember to wait 20 minutes before swimming on a full stomach.  For us, an Easter brunch that turns into an afternoon at the pool is very hard to argue with.

April 5-6. B1,388 per adult. Book via 053 253 888 or restaurant.slcm@shangri-la.com. Shangri-La Chiang Mai. 12pm-3pm

The InterContinental's Easter Sunday brunch on April 5 reads more like a greatest hits of luxury dining than a seasonal buffet. Caviar, French oysters, Canadian lobster and caramelised foie gras before you've even touched the mains – which include wok-fried crab with egg curry, roasted lamb rack and ossobuco alla milanese. The dessert station closes things out with a chocolate fountain, raspberry crème brûlée and a Lanna-style fried banana that earns its place at the end of a very long table.

Families are well looked after with an Easter egg hunt, egg painting and cupcake decorating for the kids. Children under 4 eat free, aged 5-12 get 50 percent off and groups of four only pay for three.

April 5. B2,488 per person. Book via 052 090 998 or email dining.icchiangmai@lhg.com. InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping. 12pm-3pm
