The event creator says

Join us for an exciting community wide event in which you can become a FREE member of WAWAD (Wire-car Auto Workers Association of Detroit), a project based on the making of uniquely decorated cars made out of wires. In collaboration with Garage Cultural, the cars will cruise together as a part of this year’s Cinco de Mayo Parade in SW Detroit and be showcased at various art exhibits in and around Detroit.

The making of wire-cars pushed with sticks is a cultural practice popular in the southern and central regions of Africa. WAWAD originated from the making of the first documented wire-car cruise. The video documentary of this historical performance titled a dance for Diego was a community based project meant to re-liven Diego Rivera’s conversation on Detroit as a culture of makers and dreamers.

Be sure to bring your personalized items: fabrics, bells, pictures, anything you can imagine being a part of your wire car. We will provide all the materials needed to put the car together but the decoration is all up to your imagination!
