Spread Art is pleased to announce the opening of Buffalo-based artist Colin Tucker's multi-channel site-specific sound installation voice-dross--spread art. At the opening, the installation will run throughout, and it will occasionally be augmented with lectures and performances (presented only this one night) aimed at introducing listeners to its unique sound world. At 7:30, the artist presents a lecture-demonstration concluding with a hands-on participatory performance with portable speakers. At 8:30, voices, instruments, and electronics will join the installation, subtly coloring its sounds with sustained tones which reinforce and add depth to sounds created by the audience and installation in real time.

About the piece:

voice-dross—spread art is a work for five speakers dispersed around Detroit Contemporary’s gallery and performance spaces. The concealed speakers play recordings of speaking voices at quiet, gradually changing volumes, introducing a subtle displacement into the ambient sonic environment. The speakers’ sounds, in their similarity to live sounds, activate ambiguities between live (embodied) sounds and recorded (disembodied) sounds, inviting comparison of their timbral, architectural, and ontological characteristics, and encouraging listeners to move fluidly among and between them.
