April 17 is a “Day of Dance” at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA), with a variety of activities related to the special exhibition “Dance! American Art 1830–1960.” The programs are free with museum admission and free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. There is a separate ticket charge for the exhibition.

Dancing in the DIA: Dance Chance, 11 a.m., Great Hall
Join Detroit’s ARTLAB J as they explore dance created by “chance procedure,” a method integral to the works of Merce Cunningham. This creative movement class includes dance games and the audience will create their own dance composition using dice to decide the choreography. All ages are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Dance Now Detroit: Rivera Court, 1 p.m., Rivera Court
Performances by Compañeros de Flamenco, Tableau Cadre Movement Ensemble, Na Wahine O Ke Anuenue, Wild Spirit Dance and Dance Nonce exemplify the vitality of choreographers working in metro Detroit. This program is in partnership with ARTLAB J.

Conversations in Dance: African American Dance and the Harlem Renaissance, 3:30 p.m., Lecture Hall
Penny Godboldo ( Marygrove College), Linda Simmons (Wayne State University), Robin Wilson (University of Michigan) and moderator Eva Powers (Wayne State University) discuss dance associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s.

Canvas to Dance: Rachael Ahn Harbert, 2:15 p.m., Great Hall
Rachel Ahn Harbert is a Detroit movement artist who has performed with LaMarre and Dancers, ARTLAB J and collaborated with the immersive theatre organization Nerve. She teaches modern dance at Wayne State University, Motion Study at ARTLAB J and improvisational dance throughout the area. She presents a performance inspired by works in the exhibition.

Dancing with Classics: Eisenhower Dance, DDCDances and ARTLAB J, 6 p.m., Detroit Film Theatre
