Friends School Detroit Needs Urgent Help says
50 years ago, a group of prominent businesspeople recognized a void in the Detroit educational landscape, and decided to fill it by starting Friends School in Detroit. They desired a place to send their own children that would value diversity, a welcoming atmosphere, and academic excellence above all. They put together a plan and approached The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) to be the establishing organization. 50 years later, the Quaker values of peace, simplicity, integrity, community, and equality continue to guide the school.

Friends School in Detroit has also been tied tightly to the fortunes of the City of Detroit over the course of its history. At times, this has proved to be a tremendous benefit and at others a challenge. Recently, the challenges in Detroit resulted in the city hitting rock bottom. Detroit has recently emerged from the largest municipal bankruptcy in the United States. Friends School in Detroit is trying to avoid a similar fate.

Friends School in Detroit is in dire financial straits. We urgently need $100,000 to finish the 2014-15 school year. This money is needed to meet faculty and staff payroll for the next two months. Beyond that we plan to raise $1,000,000 (one million) to stabilize the school and start an endowment fund.

We are trying desperately to avoid payless paydays for our committed teachers. We need help from you and your organization.

What we are really asking for is time. We need money to buy more of it. We are standing on a precipice. If you can help us to move back from the brink, our future looks bright.

Detroit is now one of the nation’s great comeback stories. A continually growing influx of new businesses, residents, and energy are flowing into the City of Detroit. The City is beginning to thrive anew. The need for Friends School to exist is growing once again.

Please help us make it through this short term challenge, so that we may be able to thrive anew alongside Detroit.
