If you are looking for ways to motivate your child to read and eat healthy, look no further. The “Grow with Literacy and Health” event on Saturday, April 25, 2015 will be a fun filled day of hands on food demonstrations, panels, health enthusiasts, and local authors that will educate and inspire families about the importance of literacy and health.

The author of Vernon the Vegetable Man, Yvelette Stines saw the growing statistics of childhood obesity; she knew something had to change. Her book encourages children to exercise, eat healthy, and set measurable goals. She has worked as an educator and she is also an award winning writer. Her work has been published in Essence, Black Enterprise, Michigan Chronicle, Ambassador, Jones, and Green Build and Design just to name a few. She also received the Association of Health Care Journalist Fellowship and Michigan Chronicle 40 Under 40 award.

Having to deal with the battle of bulge for years; Young serving as a local educator for over 19 years, Tweens Author, local food critic, and host of the Cooks and Books Show endured a weight battle throughout the majority of her childhood on up through her first year of college. Understanding, that the younger children start implementing healthier food choices, the less they’ll have to worrying about fluctuating weight gain she was eager to join up with Stines to assist with educating the community about the alarming eating and literacy statistics and what can be done to remedy the two.

The Grow with Literacy and Health event will take place Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. in the Wayne State University Student Center Room 285.
