Peter Croce//Rocksteady Disco

Raised on the Electrofunk sounds of Rick James, Prince, and The Time, Peter Croce started DJ’ing in his last days of undergrad. While he started behind the 1’s and 2’s later than most of his contemporaries, his electric bass playing the early 2000’s shaped his selection and mixing to this day.

More recently Peter’s original Funk influences are more than prevalent, no matter what era he’s pulling from. His sound and mixing make it apparent that he was originally a bassist, with complimentary visceral rhythms and spiritual influences, all while walking that tightrope of the DJ as an educator and as an entertainer. His bread and butter track selections stem from the milky smooth yet raw beatdown sounds of Detroit House, to the shuffley hard cross-Atlantic sounds of New York and London Garage, to the banks of West Africa for recently unearthed Highlife and Afrobeat tunes. He’s also been known to throw down a mean Reggae and Balearic set.

Peter is also the label boss for Rocksteady Disco, a new label and party out of Detroit along with his main dudes Dretraxx and Matt Dandois. The name combines two major cultural icons— Rocksteady Reggae and Discotheques. Rocksteady Reggae marked the sublime period between Ska and modern Reggae in the early 1970’s in Jamaica. Bands decided to cool it down, pour their hearts out, and add a little more groove to their sound. Disco, short for Discotheque, is a place where pre-recorded music is played. Rocksteady Disco aims to clash the communal natures of Jamaican block party soundsystem culture with the modern Discotheque sound of House, Techno, Funk, and Disco. RSD’s first release is from Detroit local legend Lafleur, with a forthcoming Record Store Day 7” from Pontchartrain entitled Hard Love Edits and a 12” from Topher Horn entitled Detroit Jazz Sessions Vol. 1.

No matter the time of day or venue, Peter aims to feed your soul, body, and mind with his deliberate selection and mixing of tracks.
