The Central Avenue District in Los Angeles flourished from the 1920's to 1955 and rivaled the Savoy and the Detroit Paradise Valley District. It was the heart of the Black American community in Los Angeles with active dance halls, R&B, and jazz music scenes. Chester's class brings the Central Avenue style to Detroit and will cover Int/Advanced patterns and moves. Part of the AHLC 2015. $20/door. (Chester is also teaching American Jazz and Tap I and II next weekend.) ALHC classes, dances and schedule:
Chester is a dance historian capable of recalling and recreating landmark dance routines from vaudeville, the Cotton Club and the TOBA circuit. As a young dancer in LA he became a protege of several tap dance legends - Leonard Reed, creator of the Shim Sham, John Bubble of Buck and the Bubbles, and his mentor Fayard Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers. Also a highly reknowned drummer and band leader, Chester has worked with some of the best in the entertainment industry. He has performed with his dance company Black Ballet Jazz, with the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster, and the great Miles Davies. Chester excudes boundless positive energy and passion for dance and is a born dancer, teacher, choreographer and trainer.
