Cinema Solariens is the multimedia project by filmmaker and musician James Harrar. He has been crafting densely lyrical film-poems since the late 1980s, exhibiting at such prestigious venues as the Museum of Modern Art, Anthology Film Archives, The Andy Warhol Museum and Yamaguchi Center for Art & Media.

Harrar also plays tenor sax and various electronics. performing with Daevid Allen (Gong, Soft Machine), Arthur Doyle, Anne La Berge, Chris Cutler & Geoff Leigh (Artaud Beats, Henry Cow), Michael Gibbons (Bardo Pond), Cathy Hayden, Giovanni Barcella, Eric Thielemans, Charles Cohen, Yahya Abdul-Majid & Art Jenkins (Sun Ra Arkestra) to name a few.

For 35 years, Harrar has been collaborating with the legendary Marshall Allen, the longest-running member and current leader of The Sun Ra Arkestra. Trained at the Paris Conservatory on the oboe and flute, Allen is best known as one of the father's of avant garde saxophone. It's also been said that his early work with the Arkestra was the first time a large, African American ensemble was lead by the flute player for an entire composition. Although his fellow Arkestra saxophonist John Gilmore was one of the most accomplished tenor players in Jazz history, it was Allen that other members saw as being nearly as "out" as Sun Ra himself.

Detroit musician and Trino All-Star drummer Kurt Prisbe will join Allen and Harrar to perform the soundtrack. Doors 8 pm. TIckets $12 minimum; $20 suggested. Reserve your seat by calling (313)737-6606 or stop by Trinosophes during business hours.
