A little bit of background:
Between 1920s and the 1950s, prior to destruction of the neighborhood due to building of interstate highways, Hastings Street was the cultural center of the African American culture in Detroit. Among others, it was the center of the entertainment district, better known as Paradise Valley, hailing first recordings of John Lee Hooker and many others.
As one of the industrial zones of the northern territories of Detroit, Milwaukee Junction was also a manufacturing hub and houses the Fisher Body 21 and Piquette Plant. While many of the buildings in the neighborhood are abandoned, many of the residential properties are functioning, along with galleries, studios, and industrial spaces.

Milwaukee and Hastings streets will be closed around the Tangent Gallery / Hastings Street Ballroom. Free parking is available on the surrounding blocks.
