Jessica Schlobohm is a prolific multi-disciplinary artist whose work has explored the symbolic and metaphoric content of materiality. Her work has ranged from large-scale sculpture and installation that have dealt with minimal concrete forms to intricate textile sculptures that dealt abstractly with the body and the problematics of American identity.

Her most recent body of work, executed here in Detroit, is exploring the materiality of skin in large-scale painting. Schlobohm’s work demonstrates a careful attention to the surface and many of her sculptural pieces have the same confrontational flatness of a painting. She has always found herself resistant to imposing form within her work; describing armature as a kind of artifice that is hidden and discontinuous from the surface. Instead, her work has been looking to find the place where the two converge.

Painting has been a surprising, albeit, natural progression for her as the media is allowing her to revisit the most basic and lasting themes in her practice. By removing the distraction of form—or the explicitly functional form/structure of a painting—these works are able to deal directly with what is happening on the surface.

The flatness of a painting is open-ended. You cannot contain a plain in the way that you can an object. You cannot hold it in your hands and pretend to possess it. It is formless and expansive. These works represent a kind of ground that precedes where the figure and the ground become distinct. Maybe they are internal landscapes as I find myself navigating these spaces blindly, more from feeling than from sight.

Jessica Schlobohm is from Southern California. She received her MFA from Goldsmith College in London in September of 2016. She has been in Detroit for the past two months, in residence at Spread Art.
