Jazz Pianist Hal Weary will be the featured speaker on Monday, October 19 at The Business of Art @ Ponyride. This event is part of Wayne State University’s ongoing speaker series presented by the Alumni Office of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts with Media Sponsorship by The Michigan Chronicle. It takes place at 6:00 p.m. at Ponyride.

During Weary’s talk at Ponyride, he will discuss different elements an artist should consider when exploring the music business. From publishing to promotion, he will be on-hand to answer the questions of emerging and mid-career artists.

“We are so pleased Hal has joined our faculty. We are certain our students and alumni will benefit greatly from his practical experience with iconic organizations like Verve Records and the Harry Fox Agency as well as his extensive performance accomplishments,” said Dr. Matthew Seeger, dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University.

Hal Weary has a national/international reputation and experience as a performer and composer and he directs the Music Business program at Wayne State University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in jazz piano performance/improvised music studies from San José State University, a master’s degree in music management from William Paterson University, and a doctor of musical arts degree in composition, arranging from Five Towns College. He also studied music at the University of Washington and Cornish College of the Arts. Prior to his assistant professorship at Albright College, he worked for Universal Music Group’s Verve Records and has many years’ experience working for The Harry Fox Agency. He continues to collaborate with world-class musicians from around the globe.

The Business of Art @ Ponyride takes place every third Monday. The October event will take place on Monday, October 19 at Ponyride. It is located at 1401 Vermont Street in Detroit’s Corktown Neighborhood. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event begins at 6:00 p.m. The discussion will be followed by a Q & A segment.
