Sunday (19 July) was an historic day as the Amashova National Classic – South Africa’s oldest road cycling race – celebrated its 40th anniversary with thousands of cyclists racing from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. The race consisted of elite racers chasing victory, first-time riders ticking off a bucket-list event, and everyone in between.
Leading the charge in the prestigious 106km race was Ryan Gibbons, who stormed to victory in the men's event in 2:12:11, ahead of Gustav Basson and Tyler Lange. In the women's race, S'annarra Grove delivered another commanding performance to claim the title in 2:30:29, finishing ahead of Sonica Klopper and Megan Botha.

New Dash for Cash thrills spectators
Adding an exciting twist to the celebrations was the inaugural Amashova Criterium Dash for Cash at Suncoast.
The top 20 men and top 20 women from the main race qualified for the fast-paced circuit event, where spectators enjoyed wheel-to-wheel racing for a share of the R55,000 prize purse.

Grove capped off a remarkable day by completing the rare double, winning both the 106km road race and the first-ever Dash for Cash.
A milestone worth celebrating
One of the biggest moments of the day belonged to cycling legend Henk Duys, who is one of the very few riders to have completed all 40 editions of the Amashova National Classic.
The event also honoured Amashova founder, Dave Wiseman, whose vision launched the race in 1986. Fresh from his own battle with cancer, Wiseman received a standing ovation before rolling off the start line and completing the anniversary event.
Race Director Annie Batchelder said: “The 40th Amashova National Classic has been everything we hoped it would be and more! To see so many cyclists sharing in this milestone and embracing the new additions to the event has been incredibly rewarding. We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped make this landmark year such a memorable success.”
