There’s nothing quite like the Southern Drakensberg in winter…especially if you’re into countryside cycling!
The Underberg Gran Fondo is returning on Saturday, 25 July 2026, and this year it's even bigger as – once again – it’s been chosen to host the 2026 KwaZulu-Natal Gravel Championships.
The event attracts everyone from elite racers to weekend adventurers, keen to tackle some of KwaZulu-Natal's most beautiful gravel roads. Rolling through quiet country lanes, river valleys and working farms, it's easy to see why the Underberg Gran Fondo has become one of the province's premier gravel cycling events.
"We're honoured that the Underberg Gran Fondo has once again been entrusted with hosting the KwaZulu-Natal Gravel Championships," says event organiser Pierre Horn. "It's recognition of the quality of our event, our magnificent routes and the commitment of the local community that supports cycling in the Southern Drakensberg.
"Gravel cycling is one of the fastest-growing disciplines in the sport because it combines challenge, adventure and camaraderie. Whether riders are competing for a provincial title or simply looking for an incredible day on the bike, the Underberg Gran Fondo offers an experience that is both demanding and immensely rewarding."
While championship hopefuls will be battling it out for provincial honours, the event is open to cyclists of all abilities, so even if you’re just looking for an unforgettable day in the saddle, this one is for you!

What you need to know

The official KwaZulu-Natal Championship races will be contested over:
- 140km: Elite to Veteran Men and Elite to Sub-Veteran Women
- 90km: Masters and older Men, and Veteran and older Women
Riders are welcome to enter any distance, although only competitors completing the designated championship route for their category will qualify for provincial championship honours.
