Take note of Amashova National Classic road closures this Sunday

Motorists are advised to plan ahead as temporary road closures come into effect across Pietermaritzburg, the N3 corridor, Hillcrest, Westville and Durban for Amashova.

If you're travelling between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday, 19 July, be prepared for temporary road closures as thousands of cyclists take part in the 40th Amashova National Classic.

The iconic event, celebrating its 40th anniversary, will see riders tackle three fully road-closed routes, with all races finishing on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue in Durban beneath the pedestrian bridge.

The 3 races start at:

  • 106km: Pietermaritzburg City Hall
  • 70km: Camperdown Spar
  • 40km: Westown Square, Shongweni

Road closure times

Motorists should expect closures at the following times:

  • Chief Albert Luthuli Street to Alexandra Road: 2am – 9.45am
  • Alexandra Road to Umlaas Road: 2am – 11.30am
  • Camperdown Spar to R103: 4.30am – 7am
  • Umlaas Road to Doornrug Road: 7am – 12pm
  • Doornrug Road to R103 (Inchanga/Valley of a Thousand Hills): 2am – 12.30pm
  • R103 Inchanga to Botha's Hill Butchery: 2am – 1.30pm
  • R103 Patna Road to R103 Galloway Road: 2am – 1.45pm
  • Westown, Shongweni, Kassier Road to M13: 5.30am – 7am
  • Old Main Road, Hillcrest to Hospital Road: 2am – 2pm
  • Hospital Road/Shongweni Road to M13 Hillcrest: 2am – 2.30pm
  • M13 Hillcrest to M13 Westville (westbound): 2am – 3pm
  • M13 Westville to M13 45th Cutting (westbound): 2am – 3pm
  • N3 outbound to Monty Naicker Street: 2am – 3.30pm
  • Monty Naicker Street (Pine Street): 2am – 3.30pm
  • Masabalala Yengwa Avenue (southbound): 2am – 4pm

Residents and visitors are encouraged to allow extra travel time, use alternative routes where possible, and follow instructions from traffic officials on the day.

The Amashova National Classic remains South Africa's oldest road cycling race and is expected to attract thousands of cyclists and spectators to KZN this weekend.
