With the arrival of the summer, the temperatures rise and the streets get hot and busy. We love outdoor life, but sometimes, it's good to escape to the heavens and enjoy a cold drink far from the bustling city. Seeking out small oases (not appropriate in this case for people with vertigo), you can contemplate the city and surrounding areas without a care in the world. These are some of our favourite sky-high terraces in Girona and the Costa Brava.

In a historic building at the beginning of Avinguda Jaume I – one of Girona's main thoroughfares – you'll find El Secret, a cocktail bar that also happens to offer some of the best views of the city. Decide which of the cocktails you want to try (the G&T menu is also spectacular) and enjoy the panorama.

The terrace of the DoubleTree is not just one of the most ideal places for admiring the city, but it's also the only hotel terrace open to the public that has a swimming-pool. Unfortunately, though, you can only swim there if you're staying at the hotel. If that's not the case, don't worry, as the terrace is accessible to everyone. And it's the ideal venue for an idyllic plan: a good drink, live music and views of Girona that you'll never forget.

The name of this hotel says it all, right? The Hotel Bellavista offers one of the most beautiful views in Girona. It's a view that you can admire from the inside of the building - through the glass façade - as well as from the terrace. In addition, throughout the summer there are concerts to accompany your fine supper with views.

Another hotel? Yes. But there's no way that we couldn't have included El Far. Why? Because it's located on the top of a cliff in Sant Sebastià de la Guarda and is surrounded by coves. To get to the terrace you don't need to be staying in the hotel, as it's actually part of the restaurant where you can savour a rice stew and a good plate of fresh shellfish from the fish market in Palamós. And enjoy the spectacular views, which include the beaches of Tamariu, Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell. Sounds great, right? Well it's even better in the flesh.

Cala Banys
  • Bars and pubs
  • Cocktail bars
  • La Selva
Without a doubt this is the most beautiful bar in the whole Costa Brava. Among other reasons because from the terrace you can enjoy daytime views of the bluest sea and the rocks of Cala Banys below your feet. At night, the spot becomes more intimate and romantic and, even though it's only five minutes from the centre of Lloret, all you'll hear is the sound of the water lapping and the voices of loved-up couples. This is a memorable and unmissable place for discovering another side to Lloret.
