With seemingly everyone in the White City preoccupied with being hip, we often overlook the few brave Tel Avivians still following unconventional - albeit, nerdy - pursuits. For those of you out there that haven’t succumbed to the Wi-Fi-dependent, party-and-brunching ways of Tel Aviv, we applaud you, and offer an unconventional list of places to find the Bible of geeks: comic books! From classic storefront locations in the city center with walls and aisles of books you’ll want to take to a bookstore café, to an online shop selling anime apparel so that you can act out your greatest fantasies, these comic book destinations making it in the 21st-century remind us that not all heroes wear capes.

Comikaza, easily identifiable by its comic and collectors’ sculpture laden windows, is a meeting place in Dizengoff Center for comic enthusiasts around the country. The store opened in Ramat Aviv in 2003, but moved to its current location 10 years ago, where it is better located to serve Telavivians comic needs. In the typical style of comic stores, shipments come in from the US once a week, so you can always find recent and popular books, apparel, and merchandise. Complete with Marvel and DC Comic decor, as well as favorite Manga and Israeli books, Comikaza lives up to its reputation as a comic haven for international aficionados.

Comics don’t usually bring to mind vegetables, unless you’re in the city center of Tel Aviv. Comics and Vegetables is an award winning comic book store on King George Street that attracts hordes of shoppers looking for comic books and genre-specific figurines. Winner of the 2011 Eisner Spirit Retail Award–the comic industry’s equivalent of the Oscar’s–the shop is packed with books and related apparel that will appeal to international comic enthusiasts spanning generations. If you can’t make it to the location, the shop is so popular that they have a second location in Ra’anana, and an online website.
