Byzantium’s Other Empire: Trebizond

Get ready to go on a historical journey to the city of Trabzon, which served as the seat of the Empire of Trebizond from the 13^th through the 15^th centuries. The focus is on historic monuments, particularly on Trabzon’s own Hagia Sophia church, which is noted for its unique architecture, sculptural decoration and Byzantine wall paintings. The show draws extensively on the archives of David and June Winfield at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, as well as photographs by international scholars who visited Trabzon in the late 1800s and early 1900s and other historic artifacts from the city.
