Adventure awaits: Johannesburg Zoo launches holiday programme

With schools officially open in Johannesburg, many parents are once again faced with the familiar challenge of keeping young ones entertained after school hours. While aftercare programmes can help, children often crave something more engaging and exciting to stimulate their curious minds.

That’s where the Johannesburg Zoo steps in. In partnership with the City of Joburg, the zoo has introduced Holiday Fun, an outdoor adventure programme designed to keep children both entertained and educated. 

The programme caters to children aged 7 to 13 years and offers a variety of activities beyond simply viewing animals. For a fee of R147 per child, young visitors can enjoy hands-on experiences such as animal feeding, interactive learning sessions, arts and crafts, and a range of fun games. It’s a well-rounded experience that combines play with education, encouraging children to connect with wildlife while developing a sense of care for animals. The programme runs from 13 until 17 April. 

For those who think the zoo experience ends at animal sightings, think again. The programme ensures that children are actively involved, making each visit both memorable and enriching.

The Johannesburg Zoo itself remains one of the city’s most beloved attractions. Established in 1904, it has built a strong legacy over the years and is home to over 320 animals. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of species, including monkeys, chimpanzees, gorillas, giraffes, elephants, and hippopotamuses, as well as birds, reptiles, and insects.

The zoo is open daily from 08:30 to 17:30, with general entry priced at R78 for children and R132 for adults. Beyond the structured programmes, families can also enjoy relaxed visits, including picnic and braai outings in designated areas.
