Airlink has extended its flight offering between Johannesburg and St Helena — the remote island located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Airlink has been operating flights between Johannesburg and St Helena since October 2017, after the island opened its airport. Before that, the island was only accessible by ship.
"St Helena Government (SHG) and Airlink are pleased to announce the release of an 18-month forward flight schedule to St Helena. Airlink will continue to operate its regular weekly Saturday service between Johannesburg (JNB) and St Helena (HLE), and monthly inter-island service between St Helena and Ascension, maintaining consistent connectivity," it announced in a statement.
“This 18-month schedule demonstrates our continued collaboration with Airlink and our shared commitment to making St Helena more accessible for everyone. This predictability is vital, especially for our community. We hope this extended view will be helpful for the local population, diaspora, and visitors in their forward planning.”
The St Helena Government (SHG) and Airlink have announced that, in addition to the weekly Saturday flights between the two regions, Airlink will introduce a seasonal Tuesday return service between Cape Town and St Helena to meet growing demand from travelers.
Chief Commercial Officer of Airlink, Katherine Whelan, has also shared excitement about the new offering.
“We are proud to continue connecting St Helena to the world through our Johannesburg and seasonal Cape Town services. The release of this extended schedule gives travelers the confidence to plan well in advance and supports the island’s ongoing tourism and economic development. St Helena is a remarkable destination, and Airlink is delighted to play a role in opening it up to more visitors,” said Whelan in a statement.
Minister for Economic Development for St Helena, Karl Thrower, adds that this collaboration “demonstrates our shared commitment to making St Helena more accessible to travelers from across the globe”.
SHG and the airline have announced that bookings are already open.
The announcement comes after Airlink added more flights to its schedule. Last month, the airline announced new flights between Johannesburg and Zanzibar. In July, Airlink added a second daily flight between Johannesburg and Walvis Bay in Namibia.
