Flying with kids can be rather difficult, to say the least. Here is how to achieve a smoother experience...

Flying with kids can be challenging, but with the right preparation, your journey doesn’t have to turn into a nightmare.
Whether you’re travelling with a baby, toddler or young child, a little planning goes a long way in making your flight experience smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.
Here are Time Out Johannesburg’s top tips for ensuring a stress-free flying experience with children as we gear up for the end-of-year holidays:
Unlike when travelling by car, flights have set check-in and boarding times. Give yourself plenty of time to check in, go through security, and board without rushing or risking missing your flight. Kids can be unpredictable, from last-minute bathroom breaks to tantrums, so arriving early will save you unnecessary stress.
If possible, book seats that offer extra legroom to make it more comfortable for your little one (and yourself). Also consider seats that offer easy aisle access for those little ones who need the bathroom regularly.
Changing a baby’s nappy on a plane can be a tricky and messy affair, so ensure they are freshly changed before boarding. However, if you need to change the nappy during the flight, talk to the flight attendant to show you if there is a designated area for a nappy change.
Take-off and landing can cause ear discomfort for little ones and even adults. To ease the pressure, breastfeed your baby, offer a bottle, or give older children something to chew. That helps reduce discomfort.
Feed your child before taking off, but also remember your child will get hungry during the trip, so don’t rely solely on in-flight meals. Pack enough snacks and food to avoid having to pay for costly options onboard. It is also important to do your research before booking to check whether your child’s dietary requirements can be met.
Keep the kids busy with toys, games, books, or downloaded videos on their mobile phones or tablets. This will help prevent boredom and restlessness during the flight.
Ensure your carry-on bag includes all essentials, from nappies, bottles, and snacks to toys and extra clothes. Ensure your list of essentials is covered. If your child takes prescribed medication, inform the airline ahead of time in case special arrangements need to be made.
Dress your little one in comfortable clothing. Also remember to pack extra clothes in case the temperature changes between the airport, plane, and destination.
Don’t hesitate to ask flight attendants for assistance. They’re trained and experienced in helping families and can assist when needed.
Travelling with kids requires patience. They might cry, throw tantrums, or demand attention throughout the journey, and that’s okay. They are children after all. Just stay calm, prepare, and enjoy the flight.
