Gautrain and the Market Theatre have joined forces for a groundbreaking initiative that blends art and public transport.

The Art in Transit project is described as “a bold cultural initiative that reimagines Gautrain spaces, from platforms to trains and buses, as living stages and canvases for South African art, performance, and storytelling.”

The project officially launched on Friday, 3 October, at the Sandton Gautrain Station.

Curated by the Market Theatre Foundation, the launch featured:

  • Dynamic live performances, including theatre and spoken word.
  • A photographic exhibition showcasing powerful South African narratives.

Bongiwe Potelwa, the Market Theatre Foundation PR specialist, says the initiative will unfold in phases.

“This was the first phase on the ground, where we hosted performances and the exhibition. The next phase will involve branding the actual station and then the trains,” she told Time Out.

The PR specialist explained that the rollout will span several years.

Each stage will gradually transform Gautrain spaces into vibrant hubs of art and culture.
