Johannesburg has long been celebrated as one of the friendliest cities in the world, and when it comes to acts of kindness, its residents often go above and beyond. From everyday greetings to meaningful gestures, the spirit of ubuntu continues to define the city’s culture.

One resident who has won the hearts of many people online is Yolanda Cuba, who shared a personal story on social media, reminding us of the power of kindness. While enjoying a simple breakfast at Tasha’s in Morningside, her bill came to just R121 for scrambled eggs, bacon, and a cappuccino. But it wasn’t the meal that left a lasting impression, it was the interaction between her and the waitress.

Yolanda admitted she had been distracted on her phone when the waitress approached her table. Without looking up, she placed her order, failing to acknowledge the person standing in front of her. After a "long period of silence", the waitress gently greeted her with a warm “good morning,” prompting Yolanda to finally look up.

That brief exchange struck a chord. In that moment, Yolanda realised she had not only been dismissive but had failed to show basic respect and acknowledge the person responsible for serving her dish. The experience reminded her of her past working as a waitress and how meaningful it is to simply be seen and acknowledged.

Moved by the interaction and the lesson it carried, she decided to make amends in a powerful way. Along with her payment, Yolanda left a R1,000 tip—far exceeding the cost of her meal. She also wrote a heartfelt note on the receipt, thanking the waitress for the lesson in respect and apologising for her earlier behaviour.

The moment stayed with her long after that day in March 2020. In fact, she kept the receipt as a reminder of the experience and recently shared it online, where it quickly went viral.

Social media users have praised the story not just for the generous tip but for its deeper message. It highlights how easy it is to overlook those around us, especially in fast-paced environments, and how small moments of awareness can lead to meaningful change.

What was also special about the moment was that the waitress shared that Yolanda's tip was exactly what she had prayed for that morning before coming to work, as she was short on rent.

More than anything, Yolanda’s story serves as a reminder of the power of humility, accountability, and kindness. In a city as vibrant as Johannesburg, it’s often these quiet, human moments that truly reflect the essence of ubuntu, recognising each other’s humanity and treating one another with dignity.
