Time Out Says…
Johannesburg is an attractive city, not only because of its quality of life, access to essential services, economic dynamism, and high-quality infrastructure and transport, but also because of its rich culture and the energy of its people. One of its true strengths also lies in diversity, innovation and a sense of community.
What makes the city stand out is that many neighbourhoods enjoy strong access to essential services, making it an appealing place to live, work, and invest.
Johannesburg hosts several reputable hospitals, including Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the third-largest hospital in the world. Residents also benefit from widespread access to clinics, specialists, and emergency services across the metro.
Like any major global metropolis, Johannesburg faces crime challenges. However, ongoing safety improvements are being implemented through enhanced technology, upgraded fire engines, and targeted crime-fighting units.
When it comes to water and electricity, Johannesburg performs well. 97.2% of households in metropolitan areas have access to tap water, and the City of Joburg maintains that its tap water is among the cleanest, safest, and healthiest globally. According to a 2019 report by the City of Johannesburg, 90% of residents had access to electricity.
Transport accessibility is another win for the metro. Johannesburg offers a mix of public transport options, including the Gautrain, which provides a fast, modern and comfortable link between key hubs. Residents also rely on buses, taxis, rail, and a broad range of e-hailing services.
