As ULTRA South Africa 2026 prepares to set the continent’s electronic scene ablaze, one of our most successful musical exports is finally coming home. Kyle Watson, the producer whose signature “chunky, hypnotic” sound has become a global house music staple, has officially confirmed a high-octane set for the Johannesburg Main Stage, a milestone moment for a career that began right here on South African soil.

Now based in the UK, Watson has spent the past decade building a formidable international reputation. From elite club residencies to chart-topping releases, his music resonates from London to Los Angeles, yet, as he tells Time Out, returning to South Africa remains a moment of profound personal significance.

The journey home

"It’s been a ride!" Watson says, reflecting on his trajectory from local talent to global powerhouse. "I feel pretty lucky that I’m one of the artists who got the opportunity to take my music to the world. In this industry, talent and hard work can get you so far, but there’s definitely an element of ‘right place, right time.’ For me, it all just lined up."

Despite his international success, the call-up for the ULTRA Main Stage feels like a graduation. "I live in the UK now, and honestly, it’s one of the biggest honours getting invited back to the country I grew up in to play the main stage," he says. "I have played a few of the other stages over the years, but to get the call-up for the main stage feels pretty good."

The signature sound

For those who haven't yet experienced a Watson set, he describes his sonic DNA as unmistakable: "You’ll recognise a Kyle Watson track through its tough, chunky basslines and hypnotic vocals. There’s also always a groovy, dark, energetic sound to my music."

It’s this specific energy that has kept him a firm favourite on the ULTRA roster year after year. To keep things fresh for the home crowd, Watson is constantly "flipping" his older records and crafting exclusive edits that exist nowhere else but his live sets.

New music and no context

The timing couldn't be better. Watson recently dropped his new single, ‘Dark Side’, featuring the haunting vocals of fellow South African Julia Church.

"Julia and I have been in contact on and off for ten years, so it feels good to finally get on a single together!" he explains. "It’s a house roller with a garage-inspired bassline. Julia’s vocals are the anchor and honestly do most of the hard work."

Fans at the Johannesburg leg can also expect a treasure trove of unreleased IDs. "I’m sitting on a lot of unreleased music right now," Watson teases. "I also have some upcoming releases from my label, No Context Records, to test out, which I am excited about."

What to expect at ULTRA 2026

When Watson steps onto that Main Stage, he has one mission: high-voltage energy.

"I have got to keep the energy high on a main stage like this. I am planning to drop a lot of my own edits, some of the tracks people would expect, and a few surprises. I am so ready!"

ULTRA South Africa descends on Johannesburg next month. Don't miss the homecoming of one of our finest electronic architects.
