The Gauteng High Court handed down a major judgment on 17 June 2025, effectively halting the implementation of Mango Airlines’ long-awaited Business Rescue Plan, for now. This comes after the airline announced its much-awaited return earlier in the month.

The ruling was against a key part of Mango Airlines’ Business Rescue Plan, specifically a clause that would’ve transferred certain rights to third parties. The court found this clause invalid, effectively putting a pause on the plan as it stands.

But don’t count Mango out just yet.

Business Rescue Practitioner Sipho Sono has confirmed that Mango will challenge the ruling. A legal appeal is already in the works, with documents being prepared to set things back on course. It’s a reminder that even in the face of turbulence, the fight for Mango’s return to the skies is far from over.

While this legal hiccup may delay Mango’s long-anticipated return, it doesn’t signal the end. The planned appeal keeps hopes alive for thousands of loyal travellers and employees who’ve been eagerly awaiting news of Mango’s future.

Since entering business rescue in 2021, Mango’s story has been one of uncertainty, resilience, and public support. The airline once dominated the local skies with its signature orange planes and competitive fares, making travel more accessible for South Africans. The possibility of a return has remained a hot topic, especially in a market hungry for affordable domestic travel.

Although it’s still a waiting game, one thing’s clear: Mango is not out of the fight. With the appeal in motion, the airline's comeback story is still unfolding, and we’re watching this space.
