December is in full swing, and Johannesburg is buzzing. From weddings and functions to festivals, concerts, outings, and city-wide celebrations, there are a lot of cool things happening this December, and as true Joburgers, we know how to make the most of it. However, while this is a season to be merry, it’s also a time when safety should be top of mind. Across South Africa, crime tends to escalate during the festive season, making it more critical than ever to celebrate responsibly. You can still party like a true Joburger, just make sure you do it safely.

Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe while having fun:

Verify the event

Before attending any event, make sure it’s legitimate. Don’t rely solely on posters or social media posts. Confirm that the event is registered and that safety protocols are in place. Recently, authorities warned against unregistered street bashes and events that do not comply with safety regulations. This follows tragic incidents at festivals, reminding us of the importance of vigilance. Always know where you’re going and ensure it’s a safe location.

Watch your belongings

Joburg is known for its friendly vibe, and making new friends comes naturally. Still, this festive season, don’t trust strangers too easily. Be aware of who you allow into your space and keep your belongings close. Never leave valuables unattended; not everyone at the party is there for the right reasons.

Drink responsibly

Know your limits. If you plan on drinking, make sure you’re with people you trust who can help look out for you and ensure you get home safely. Overindulgence often leads to risky situations that could easily be avoided.

Don’t accept food or drinks from strangers

Food and drink spiking is a genuine concern during this time of year. Rather, dish for yourself and keep an eye on your drinks at all times. Never leave your drink unattended.

Avoid lifts from strangers

While someone may offer to drive you home, think twice before accepting a ride from someone you don’t know. Instead, use trusted e-hailing services, public transportation options that are safe, or call a friend or loved one to pick you up.

Don't drink and drive

Drunk driving remains a significant concern in Johannesburg, especially during the festive season. Law enforcement has already arrested more than a hundred motorists in the first week of December alone. If you’re drinking, don’t drive; it’s that simple. Choose safety over convenience.

Being a true Joburger means knowing how to have a good time and knowing when to be smart. Celebrate, enjoy the city, and make unforgettable memories, but always prioritise your safety.
