The Market Theatre is a proud host of the U.S Musical Blues in the Night which premiers in Africa for the first time this February.

Love and betrayal have fascinated audiences since the beginning of time, inspiring countless plays, films, and novels across generations. One musical that has explored these emotions with remarkable power since the 1980s is Blues in the Night, and now, for the very first time, the acclaimed production is coming to the African continent.
Johannesburg is among the lucky cities set to host this celebrated U.S musical, which will run at the Market Theatre from 5 to 22 February 2026. The Tony-nominated musical was conceived by American television and theatre director Sheldon Epps. It uses timeless blues classics to tell the story of three women romantically involved with the same man.
Through melodies and emotionally charged performances, audiences follow the women as they navigate love, deception, heartbreak, and resilience. It is a story many are familiar with: falling in love with a cheater.
The production features legendary songs from artists such as Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, and many others, capturing both the pain and beauty of life and relationships.
The musical features Chasity Alliston, Zan Tarria R Edwards, Grant Kee and Jamille Hunter.
Over the years, Blues in the Night has garnered widespread acclaim worldwide, earning Tony nominations and praise from theatre lovers who describe it as “raw,” “thrilling,” and “unforgettable.” The musical has continued to captivate audiences with its honesty and emotional depth.
It has been hosted in cities such as Los Angeles and London, and The Market Theatre, in partnership with Hattiloo Theatre, have teamed up to bring the musical to Joburgers.
Tickets are available through WebTickets, ranging from R110 to R220, and performances begin at 7 pm.
For Joburgers looking to escape the pressures of daily life and immerse themselves in stirring storytelling, powerful voices, and timeless music, Blues in the Night promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience.
