Welcome to Local Intel, your ultimate guide to experiencing Johannesburg like a true insider. In this series, we sit down with local personalities, tastemakers, and city enthusiasts to unlock their most cherished spots, their go-to experiences, and the untold stories that make this city so utterly captivating. Forget the guidebooks, this is your direct line to authentic Joburg.

When he’s not tearing up stages with his alt-metal band, Deity’s Muse, Wayne Boucher is out exploring Johannesburg one pint, park and pizza at a time. From hidden hiking trails and hop-forward brews to karaoke nights and fiery margaritas, this local rocker’s picks hit all the right notes. Whether you're chasing the city’s best blue cheese pizza or looking for the perfect spot to scream-sing Nirvana in a neon-lit booth, Wayne’s got your weekend sorted.

Gino’s Restaurant

Established in 1983 and still going strong, Gino’s Restaurant is an institution of the Joburg southern suburbs. If you’re looking for affordable, authentic Italian cuisine, and the best pizzas in Gauteng, then this is the place to go. One doesn’t simply make a booking at this fine family-run establishment - only walk-ins are welcome.

Considering that Gino’s can afford to close over the December holidays, while Gino and his family make their annual pilgrimage to Italy, speaks volumes for Gino’s popularity.

Agar’s Brewery

If you’re a beer snob like me, then the immaculate beers which Agar’s Brewery produces will quench even the most discerning of all beer thirsts. I highly recommend attending one of their open days, held at the brewery on the last Friday of every month, for a delicious beer on tap. My personal favourite brews on offer are their Tomahawk IPA, the Black Mamba Stout, their Warrior NEIPA double IPA, and their newly launched Agar’s 8 Belgian Dubbel. If you can’t make it to the brewery on a Friday, then check out their website for a list of locations where you can get your Agar’s fix. I’m salivating as I type this!

The Wilds

An official Johannesburg Heritage Site, The Wilds is a scenic nature reserve and hiking spot in the heart of Houghton. This inner-city park is the perfect location to take your dog for a walk or to clear your mind with a short stroll through picturesque gardens. I love the 360-degree view of the city skyline from The Wilds’ highest koppie. Whether you need a 30-minute break or a long chill session checking out the various artworks strewn on its lawns, consider giving The Wilds a go. Oh, and entrance is free.

Sognage

If you’re looking for a live music experience with a focus on world-class lighting and sound, then Sognage is the place for you. They’ve hosted the cream of the South African
rock, metal and blues scene since opening in 2020. I’ve played many an unforgettable show with my band, Deity’s Muse, at this spectacular venue.

Their parties aren’t limited to local bands alone, Sognage also regularly plays host to live international acts and some of Joburg’s most talked-about drum ‘n bass jols.

Delta Café & Don Quixote

If you find yourself feeling hungry after an amble through the walking trails of Delta Park, one of many official Johannesburg City parks, then why not stop for a bite at Delta Café & Don Quixote? This is the perfect brunching and lunching spot if you’re looking for a chill with a view and scrumptious food. You must try their blue cheese and pear pizza, I implore you!

Kings Kloof

One of the advantages of living in densely populated Johannesburg is that you don’t need to travel far to feel like you’re out in the country. I love getting out in nature for a hike or a run on the trails, and Kings Kloof, only 28kms from Fourways, is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and its surrounding suburbs.

With a wide variety of hiking, running or MTB trails on offer, starting from the easy 6km route to the more technically advanced 27km route, you’re guaranteed an enjoyable day out – no matter your skill level. They’re only open on weekends and public holidays, so get there early and grab a cup of coffee at the entrance before you start your day’s activity.

La Rosa

Sometimes I get a hankering for a spicy adult beverage and La Rosa always delivers on that front. Their Spicy Cucumber Mint Margarita, loaded with jalapenos is out of this world. If you’re looking for fresh Mexican street food, tasty cocktails, or a seemingly endless choice of tequilas, then go check out their branch in Montecasino or Randpark Ridge.

Saigon Suzy

Bao buns, dumplings, sushi, sake and private karaoke booths. Now that’s a vibe! I recently enjoyed a great night out in Rosebank, indulging in Saigon Suzy’s small plates of delicious, authentic Vietnamese Street food, Asian beers and a rather questionable performance of Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ in one of their ‘No Tell Motel’ Karaoke booths.

Robyn Park

Given that Johannesburg is often referred to as the world’s largest man-made urban forest, it’s no surprise that we have plenty of parks to explore. Robyn Park is my local park, and it’s a mere 1km walk from my home. At least once a week, I’ll get my trail running shoes on and go for a 5km cardio session next to the Klein Jukskei River. Winding my way breathlessly through Robyn Park’s giant blue gum trees is my version of therapy.

Souvlaki Box

Sometimes I’m in a bit of a rush to get somewhere, and I don’t have time to make food or sit down for a meal. That’s when I turn to Souvlaki Box in Olivedale. They make the most epic Greek street food and coffee. I’m a big fan of their chicken yiro wraps with extra hummus. Their vegetarian options are also rather delightful.
