Last year it was decided that August 27 should become National Burger Day. And who are we to argue – particularly when a number of venues in Leeds have decided that they will be offering diners some money off their burgers to celebrate?

So, if you needed an excuse to stuff your face with a delicious meat patty (or vegetarian alternative) placed between a bun, this is it. Here are six city centre venues offering a tempting 20% off this most tasty of meals today:

Meat Liquor

While many burger joints go for scale, packing as much as they can between the buns, Meat Liquor opts for a delicious burger that's easy to handle. The Dead Hippie is a firm favourite, which consists of two mustard-fried beef patties, Dead Hippie sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and minced white onions.

Brasserie Blanc

While this restaurant might be better known for its authentic French a la carte menu, it seems even chef Raymond Blanc and his sophisticated taste are partial to a burger. While the every day menu features a vegetarian burger, made with comte cheese and served in a brioche bun, there's bound to be a meaty option too.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen

Started by three New Zealanders back in 2001, these guys have been doing the fancy burger thing before it became a 'thing'. Classics on the GBK menu include the Taxidriver (American cheese, house onion ring, Cajun relish, smoked chilli mayo, dill pickle, salad in a brioche bun) and, of course, the Kiwi (Beetroot, fried egg, pineapple, mature Cheddar, house mayo, relish and salad).

It Bar and Food Joint

These guys offer, in their own words, 'all singin' all dancin' burgers that are like being kissed by a sexy meat beast'. It Bar's flagship burger is the Filthy Pig: an 8oz patty, pulled pork, streaky bacon, BBQ sauce, with lettuce and slaw. Pictured here is the Mac 'N' Cheesy, which consists of macaroni cheese with mature cheddar, beef patty, Monterey Jack, caramalised onions and crispy bacon.

Handmade Burger Co.

With a huge selection of beef and chicken burgers on offer, the Handmade Burger Co. can cater to all manner of tastes. Stand out burgers from the menu include the Peanut Butter & Bacon burger (peanut butter, smoked bacon, chilli jam, lettuce, tomato and red onion), along with the Italian (Mediterranean sausage, mozzarella, red pesto, mayo, rocket, tomato and red onion).

The Oracle Bar

Even with stiff competition in Leeds, the Oracle had remained a popular spot by the waterside to enjoy a tasty burger for the last ten years. If you want to try something different, you could opt for an Oriental Burger (a beef patty topped with shredded duck, hoisin sauce and wasabi mayonnaise), or the Biryani Bhaji Burger (a rice spiced burger with, cumin, ginger, aubergines, butternut squash and red peppers, coated in a onion Bhaji crust).
