Not too long ago, anyone who took the time to photograph their meal at a restaurant would have met some peculiar stares. Today, spend any time on Instagram and you'll find it awash with avocado on toast, massive burgers and latte art.

Luckily for Leeds, we're yet to hear of an eating or drinking establishment that has banned the use of Instagram. So, what culinary delicacies are most frequently snapped?

We've diligently searched hundreds of users from Leeds and compiled a list of the most frequently geotagged eateries with a #Leeds or #Leedsfood hashtag.

Here are fourteen of the most popular, in descending order:

 14. Friends of Ham

Friends of Ham has become a firm favourite with those who live and travel to Leeds, thanks to its close proximity to Leeds city train station. In fact, it's become so popular Friend of Ham has had to expand its once tiny premises by stretching along the road and ridding the city of some of its many loan shops. It has certainly livened up the once dark and dreary New Station Street.

13. Dough Boys

Dough boys are the resident pizza guys in Belgrave Music Hall. Their delicious slices are available throughout the day and late in to the night, making them top pickings for a post-booze soaker-upper.

12. My Thai

My Thai has been the talk of neighbouring Bradford for years and it has recently expanded to show Leeds what we have been missing all these years. My Thai's authentic dishes that won't break the bank – but make sure you arrive with plenty of time, as their small restaurant is always packed to the rafters day or night.

Don't fancy waiting around for a table? They do take out too.

11. The Reliance

The Reliance is an old favourite in Leeds, and its appearance on this list show that, although newer kids on the block are topping the bill in popularity, the Reliance has not been forgotten.

Pay it a visit and check out the twists on traditional British cuisine, or sample the homemade cured meats that are so good they are supplying Friends of Ham.

10. MEATLiquor

MEATLiquor finally made its way up North to Leeds, and its loud, brash food hasn't failed to be noticed, with diners taking snaps of the mouth-watering food and cocktails on a daily basis.

9. The Greedy Pig

The Greedy Pig is best known for its breakfasts and this traditional start to the day is without doubt its most Instagrammed dish. The cafe has taken it up a notch lately, meaning you'll now find it open on Friday and Saturday nights, serving 'small plates' such as ox tongue, lentils and mustard.

8. Patty Smith's

With such regular appearances in Leeds feeds, Patty Smith's burgers and session fired have clearly been voted as the best by Instagrammers. The Patty Smith's burger joint is housed alongside Dough Boys in Belgrave Music Hall and pair perfectly with one of Belgrave's constant rotation of craft ales.

7. The Grub and Grog Shop

The Grub and Grog Shop is housed in the Northern Monk Refectory, providing breakfast, lunch and dinner to the people of Leeds. Its wholesome food arranged on enamel plates is on trend and certainly getting them noticed in the Instagram world.

6. The Alchemist

Instagram is packed with pictures of the Alchemist's creative cocktails and the Leeds' Instagram feed is no different. From dry ice to blowtorched meringue, you'll find many a tipsily taken photo of its luscious drinks.

5. Mrs Atha's

It's clear that the people of Leeds are fans of latte art and one of the most Instagrammed coffee houses in the city is Mrs Atha's, which lovingly creates these little works of art in each and every cup.

4. Pieminister

It's amazing to think that a Northerner wasn't responsible for this concept of a pie-only restaurant. Still, while Pieminister originates from Bristol, it has still become a firm favourite with Leodians since it's first restaurant in Leeds opened in May.

It's clear to see from Instagram that the Leeds' favourite combination of pie, mash and gravy is as enduringly popular as ever. Proper Northern food.

3. Zaap Thai

Zaap Thai might be relatively fresh on the Leeds' food scene but it sure has made an impact. Zaap aims to transport you to the streets of Bangkok, with a restaurant that featuring tuk tuks and food stalls cooking fresh Thai street food before your eyes.

2. Laynes Espresso

Once again showing the city's love of latte art, heading the top of the chart is Laynes Espresso. Neighbours of Friends of Ham, Laynes carefully source the best coffee for the people of Leeds, and they certainly like what Laynes have to offer.

1. Bundobust

In at number one for the most popular Instagrammed food is Bundobust. The coming together of two Bradford establishments – real ale pub the Sparrow and Prashad, an entirely vegetarian India restaurant – Bundobust sells craft ale and street food-sized portions of Indian cuisine. It's certainly proved a winning concept, if all these snaps are anything to go by!
