Professor Serebryakov, in ill health, returns to his estate after a long absence with his new, beautiful, younger wife Yeliena. A country doctor is called in to help the ailing man. For 25 years, the estate has been cared for by Vanya, who doesn't react kindly to the suggestion that it might be sold...
