Modern theatre where you can see plays, musicals, comedy, panto and more
For a night of culture, entertainment and sophistication, look no further than the famed West Yorkshire Playhouse at Quarry Hill. The large and contemporary stage’s red brick exterior may not look as inviting as the Leeds Grand, but holds a world-class theatre where the country’s largest touring plays and ballets regularly have runs. Sloped seating means all ticketholders are offered an excellent view of the action, while ample car parking, commended disabled access, and a highly praised restaurant make sure that a few hours’ entertainment can be turned into a complete, easy and satisfying experience.
Every famous production imaginable has toured via the WYP, but the theatre isn’t afraid to take risks, with lesser-known or more challenging works. Children are particularly well catered for, with plenty of shows on during school holidays, featuring fairytales, pantomimes and sing-alongs staged to engage young minds.
The on-site restaurant serves good-quality food all day long, and you don’t have to be a ticketholder to dine, which means a lunch stop-off for a slice of pizza or a jacket potato is a great option if you’re at the bus station end of town. Meanwhile, the neighbouring Aagrah restaurant and The Wardrobe pub both open late and offer cut-price deals upon the production of a ticket for the same evening’s show, so there’s no reason to fret about having to walk for miles to go for a post-performance curry or pint.
