Macklemore: keeping it real

With a second album and a new baby daughter to juggle, we quiz the ‘Thrift Shop’ rapper about life in the real world

By Nick Levine

The thrift shop-raiding, moped-riding, Grammy-winning rapper has just released his latest album, ‘This Unruly Mess I’ve Made’, with his partner-in-rhyme Ryan Lewis – and had a baby girl too. But can this new dad can still keep it hip hop? Let’s find out…

Let’s start with something easy. How much does a first class stamp cost?
‘I haven’t mailed a letter by hand since 1997. I’m pretty sure my pen pal is dead by now.’

What’s in your pockets right now?
‘Just the usual: phone charger, film camera, chapstick, a baby sock and a bottle of Orangina.’

If you could have a superpower for one day what would it be?
‘It would have to be a tie between flying and having a huge pee-pee.’

Speaking of which, Kanye rapped that he wanted a GoPro on his. What do you want on yours?
‘A vagina… or perhaps a strobe light. Maybe both?’

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought for your newborn baby?
‘A Sean John velour jumpsuit with a pair of matching Lugz.’

What do you get up to on your days off?
‘I love a good trip to the zoo. I try to make it at least four or five times a week. You know – typical rapper shit.’

The verdict: zoo trips and velour babygrows? Mack keeps it real, hip hop dad-style.
